Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Environment
Government of the Republic of Newfoundland
Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Environment
Stewarding Newfoundland’s natural resources through sustainable energy transition, responsible mining, and environmental protection.
Mandate
The Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Environment is committed to the stewardship and sustainable management of Newfoundland’s natural resources, including its vast energy and mineral deposits. The ministry’s strategic focus is on integrating renewable energy sources, enhancing domestic processing capacity, and ensuring balanced ecological practices. Our vision is to achieve a carbon-neutral national grid by 2035 while maintaining Newfoundland’s leadership in sustainable development and resource sovereignty.
Within its mandate, the ministry oversees permitting processes, climate strategy, and the promotion of technological innovations in energy and mining sectors. By encouraging local beneficiation and supporting initiatives like the Trans-Labrador Rail Link and Argentia Refinery Complex, we aim to ensure that Newfoundland’s resources benefit both the environment and the economy, aligning growth with ecological integrity.
Strategic Priorities (2024–2030)
- Achieve 90% renewable domestic energy by 2030 and full carbon-neutrality by 2035.
- Enhance domestic processing with the Strategic Minerals Act, mandating local beneficiation for all critical minerals.
- Implement the Labrador Mining Corridor to optimize resource extraction and reduce emissions by 28%.
- Expand renewable energy projects including the Wreckhouse Wind Farm and Bonavista Tidal Pilot.
- Reforest one million hectares by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Forest Management program.
- Ensure permanent public ownership of hydro and mining resources.
- Develop the Mineral Innovation Centre for advancements in autonomous drilling and environmental monitoring.
- Integrate AI resource mapping and satellite oversight for real-time environmental protection.
