Government of the Republic of Newfoundland

Ministry of Energy & Resources and Ministry of Environment & Climate

Stewarding the Republic of Newfoundland’s natural resources through sustainable energy transition, responsible resource development, and environmental protection.

Mandate

The Ministry of Energy & Resources and the Ministry of Environment & Climate are jointly committed to the stewardship and sustainable management of the Republic of Newfoundland’s natural resources, including its energy and mineral deposits. Their shared strategic focus is on integrating renewable energy sources, enhancing domestic processing capacity, and ensuring balanced ecological practices. Our vision is to advance a resilient national grid and responsible resource economy while maintaining the Republic of Newfoundland’s leadership in sustainable development and resource sovereignty.

Within this mandate, the ministries oversee permitting processes and the promotion of technological innovations in the energy and resource sectors. By encouraging local beneficiation and supporting initiatives such as strategic Labrador transportation links and value‑added processing hubs, we aim to ensure that the Republic of Newfoundland’s resources benefit both the environment and the economy, aligning growth with ecological integrity.

Strategic Priorities (2024–2030)

  • Increase the share of renewable domestic energy in the national mix by 2030, supporting a long-term transition to a lower‑carbon grid.
  • Enhance domestic processing with strategic minerals legislation, encouraging local beneficiation for designated critical minerals.
  • Coordinate Labrador resource corridors to optimize development and reduce lifecycle emissions.
  • Expand renewable energy projects including the Wreckhouse Wind Farm and Bonavista Tidal Pilot.
  • Advance large‑scale reforestation and ecosystem restoration as part of sustainable forest management programs.
  • Safeguard enduring public ownership and oversight of major hydro and strategic mineral resources.
  • Develop a Mineral Innovation Centre for advancements in autonomous drilling and environmental monitoring.
  • Integrate AI resource mapping and satellite oversight for real-time environmental protection.
