Mandate
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) in Newfoundland is dedicated to developing a comprehensive and integrated transportation network that ensures connectivity, sustainability, and resilience. Driven by the National Transportation Vision 2050, MTI aims to create a unified system linking physical, digital, and energy infrastructures nationwide. The ministry focuses on connecting every community via road, air, or sea within 24 hours, maintaining sovereign control over critical transportation data, and achieving a carbon-neutral logistics and transport grid by mid-century.
Core responsibilities include the development and maintenance of highways, rail networks, ports, and digital corridors. Emphasis is placed on promoting public-private partnerships to enhance infrastructure development, ensuring national oversight and benefit-sharing. Special focus is given to engineering infrastructure to withstand North Atlantic climate challenges, supported by the National Infrastructure Fund and guided by rigorous sustainability standards.
Strategic Priorities
- Modernize the Trans-Island Highway to meet the Twin Carriageway Standard NF-140.
- Complete the Trans-Labrador Rail Link by 2035 as part of the Green Corridor Highway System.
- Achieve carbon-neutral certification for all major ports by 2040.
- Expand the National Logistics Cloud to integrate real-time data across all transport modes.
- Invest 3% of GDP annually into infrastructure renewal with sustainable practices.
- Develop an EV and Hydrogen Service Network with stations every 50 km.
- Enhance aviation facilities at Goose Bay and electrify the national fleet.
- Introduce new engineering standards for climate-induced challenges.
