Mandate

The Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation of the Republic of Newfoundland is dedicated to fostering positive relationships with Indigenous communities, based on mutual respect, trust, and understanding. Its core responsibilities include promoting self-determination, supporting sustainable socio-economic development, and preserving cultural heritage. The ministry focuses on the implementation of agreements that recognize Indigenous rights, facilitating government-to-government collaborations, and nurturing partnerships that empower Indigenous peoples, including the Mi’kmaq of Newfoundland and Indigenous communities in Labrador. The strategic focus of the ministry is guided by the Republic’s constitutional commitment to Indigenous rights and reconciliation, striving to address historical harms while building a prosperous and inclusive future for all Indigenous communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Strategic Priorities

  • Implement and support the Labrador Accord, including measures that grant self-administered education to Inuit and Innu communities in Labrador, in keeping with their rights and priorities.
  • Strengthen government-to-government relationships with Indigenous Peoples through regular consultations and structured engagement mechanisms.
  • Facilitate economic development projects that promote Indigenous entrepreneurship and employment in both Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Promote and preserve Indigenous languages and cultural practices, including Mi’kmaw and Inuttitut, through funding and educational programs where communities request it.
  • Enhance access to healthcare and social services tailored to Indigenous needs, in partnership with Indigenous leadership and service providers.
  • Address land use, land claims, and resource management in collaboration with Indigenous communities, respecting treaty and constitutional obligations.
  • Support initiatives that tackle social issues such as housing, education, and mental health in Indigenous communities.
  • Foster cross-cultural understanding and public awareness through educational campaigns that highlight Indigenous histories, rights, and contemporary contributions to the Republic of Newfoundland.
