Government of the Republic of Newfoundland Announces Speed Limit Increase on Trans Newfoundland Highway

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 13, 2025
St. John’s, Newfoundland — The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has announced a significant change to the speed regulations on the Trans Newfoundland Highway. Following extensive safety upgrades, including the completion of a new fencing system along the highway to prevent animal crossings, the maximum speed limit will be increased to 140 km/h in most sections.
This decision comes after careful review of the detailed report from the Autobahn Club of Newfoundland. The government’s aim is to facilitate smoother and more efficient travel across the Island and Labrador, recognizing the vast distances and travel needs of its citizens.
“The enhancements made along the Trans Newfoundland Highway reflect our commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and ensuring the safety of our citizens,” stated Hon. Thomas Bennett, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure. “By raising the speed limit, we are responding to the needs of our communities while maintaining rigorous safety standards.”
Over the next 12 months, the government will gather feedback and suggestions from the public to assess the possibility of adopting even higher speed limits in the future, potentially introducing sections with unlimited speed.
