Overview
The Government of Newfoundland operates under a democratic constitution ratified in 2026. Its purpose is to safeguard the liberty, welfare, and prosperity of the people through effective administration, fair representation, and respect for the rule of law.
Newfoundland’s political system blends historical parliamentary tradition with modern digital transparency. Decisions of national importance are debated in open session and recorded for public access, reflecting a government that is truly of, by, and for its citizens.
Structure of Government
The Constitution establishes three independent yet cooperative branches — the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary.
Executive Branch
The President serves as Head of State and guardian of the Constitution. The Prime Minister leads the Council of Ministers, which directs the day-to-day affairs of government. Together, they ensure national unity, continuity of policy, and representation abroad.
Legislative Branch
The National Assembly consists of two chambers: the House of Assembly and the Senate of Newfoundland. Laws are passed only through open deliberation and majority approval in both houses.
Judicial Branch
The Supreme Court of Newfoundland serves as the final guardian of justice, ensuring that every act of government conforms to constitutional principles and protects civil rights.

The Council of Ministers coordinates policy across a series of specialized ministries responsible for national development, education, health, industry, and the environment.
