Overview

The Royal Newfoundland Air Force (RNAF) provides air defence, maritime patrol, strategic airlift, search and rescue, and surveillance operations across Newfoundland, Labrador, and the North Atlantic. Operating from four air stations, the RNAF maintains a modern fleet of fighters, patrol aircraft, transport planes, and helicopters.

As a founding NATO member, the RNAF hosts allied training operations and contributes to North Atlantic air security and Arctic surveillance.

Air Force Stations

  • RNAF Station Gander – Strategic airfield for maritime patrol operations, intelligence and surveillance, and trans-Atlantic support in Central Newfoundland
  • RNAF Station Goose Bay – Arctic Air Command headquarters, strategic airlift, fighter operations, and NATO training range in Labrador
  • RNAF Station Stephenville – Fighter training, search and rescue operations, and maritime support on the West Coast
  • RNAF Station Torbay – Capital region air defence, Quick Reaction Alert (QRA), and helicopter operations near St. John’s

Aircraft & Equipment

  • NF-39 Arctic Hawk (Gripen E) – Multi-role fighter aircraft for air defence and precision strike
  • NF-140 Aurora II – Long-range maritime patrol aircraft for anti-submarine warfare and surveillance
  • NC-130 Hercules II – Tactical airlift for strategic transport and humanitarian missions
  • NH-149 Cormorant II – Long-range search and rescue helicopter
  • NH-92 Viking – Utility helicopter for medium-lift transport
  • NU-18 Horizon – Unmanned aerial system for ISR and target tracking

Command Structure

  • Commander Royal Newfoundland Air Force – Overall air command, headquartered at Goose Bay
  • Arctic Air Command – Northern operations and strategic airlift from Goose Bay
  • Fighter Command – Air defence and QRA operations
  • Maritime Air Command – Anti-submarine warfare and patrol operations from Gander
  • Search and Rescue Command – SAR operations coordinated from Stephenville
