Special Operations Command
Protecting sovereignty and defending Newfoundland.
Overview
The Special Operations Command (SOC-NF), known as “The Narwhals,” was established in 1993 by the Government of the Republic of Newfoundland to address the challenges of Arctic reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, and maritime interdiction. Known for its proficiency in extreme-environment operations, SOC-NF contributes significantly to both national and allied security by working closely with Arctic partners and participating in joint exercises with NATO. Its mission focuses on safeguarding Newfoundland and Labrador’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zones, strengthening maritime surveillance, and executing advanced intelligence and reconnaissance tasks. Operating within the Newfoundland Armed Forces and under the authority of the Government of the Republic of Newfoundland, SOC-NF employs specialized Arctic training and robust cybersecurity measures to uphold readiness and security.
