Armistice Day Commemoration to Honor the Sacrifice of Newfoundland’s War Dead

ST. JOHN’S – The Republic of Newfoundland will observe Armistice Day on November 11, a national holiday dedicated to remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. This year, the ceremonial events will include a traditional parade from Fort William to the National War Memorial, culminating in a poignant service of remembrance.

In a display of respect and gratitude, the Royal Newfoundland Air Force (RNAF) will conduct a flypast during the commemorative service. This annual observance serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to remember those who have served and given their lives in the line of duty. As we gather, the country will unite to reflect on the bravery and dedication exhibited by our Armed Forces.

“Armistice Day is an important occasion that allows us to pause and honour the legacy of those who fought valiantly for our freedoms,” said Minister of Defence, the Honourable Jane Murphy. “As we come together for the parade and the memorial service, let us reaffirm our commitment to keeping their memories alive and supporting the veterans who continue to serve our community.”

Background

Armistice Day, originally commemorated to mark the end of World War I in 1918, has evolved into a significant day for all nations affected by conflict. In Newfoundland, the observance not only pays tribute to those who fought in the Great War but also acknowledges conflicts fought in subsequent years. The National War Memorial stands as a symbol of the sacrifice and courage of all our military personnel.

Each year, the Republic of Newfoundland invites its citizens to participate in this solemn occasion, reflecting the values of remembrance, service, and solidarity that define our nation. The events will begin at 10:30 AM at Fort William, leading to the National War Memorial for the wreath-laying ceremony, followed by a brief address and the flypast by the RNAF at 11:00 AM.

Members of the public are encouraged to partake in the observances and to wear poppies as a gesture of remembrance. Local schools and organisations are also invited to arrange group attendance to honour our war dead collectively.
